We’re finishing up our four-lesson study called “Me and the Church,” with a lesson on the theme of “divine anticipation.” Simply put, we have the opportunity to recognize how God is already working in our lives right now. It may or may not be what we would call an unmistakable miracle, but it is His presence nonetheless.
Unfortunately, countless distractions in our lives can keep us from seeing this. You probably see this in your kids as they multitask: grabbing a snack in one hand, texting friends with their other hand, singing out loud to whatever music is pumping in their ears all so they can get back to the 30 browser tabs open on their computer. Maybe that’s an exaggeration for your household, but those distractions are there all the time. Top that off with our skepticism that God is still doing things, and it can be really easy to miss what is happening.
I want to offer you one thought today that may glue it all together: The last creature to discover the existence of water just may very well be a fish. Think about what that means (not just for the fish, but for you) as you use these questions to stir up a conversation at home:
- What doubts can keep you from believing Jesus will do miracles in your life?
- In what ways do you or don’t you expect God to answer your prayers?
- Would you describe Jesus as doing miracles in your generation? Why or why not?
I’m looking forward to hearing how you find some of that “water” with your teenager this week. Swim on!
